I'm thoroughly enjoying your writeups, esp. this one. You showed me some value that I hadn't seen before (esp. with Wurman's talk).

Richard:

I hope my session was helpful to you. We did stray from the deck quite a bit but it was obvious, at least to me, that we needed a more interactive session. Mine was the 3rd Agile session of the day for many people and there is just too much to talk about.

Rather than pontificating from the podium, I did try and draw in audience members who I knew had experience with Agile to give their views and help answer questions.

If you have anything you'd like additional information about or have questions, contact me or join the Content Wrangler Community Agile Documentation group.

Best regards,
Mike

Great entries from the conference. Thanks for putting these together, it helps me feel like I got a little more out of the conference just by reading them, even though I too was there. :)

Found these because you tagged them with stc2008, so I will tag mine as well. Good thinking!

You have that right about motivation being internal. And since it is, the only way to gain someone else's commitment is to allow that person the unleash their own motivation.

How? That is the easy part. Treat them with great respect by carefully listening to them and helping them in any way they say they need. Only in this environment will people unleash their full potential of creativity, innovation, productivity, motivation and commitment. This applies to business or any pursuit such as tornado disaster relief.

Best regards, Ben

Rick, I noticed you in the audience during this panel. I really appreciate your session posts and of course read this one with an even greater interest. Thanks for taking the time to post such a thorough writeup. I remember our discussion at Doc Train, and at the time I didn't realize you were such a prolific blogger. Keep it up.

Met you at the STC Summit earlier tonight.
I remember reading your experience with the tornado volunteers in the Mgmt SIG listserve. Good observations on the question of what motivates people.

[...] Richard Hamilton has an interesting, lengthy blog post on why he considers reuse to be harmful. Hamilton definitely isn’t against reuse, but as he says: While I advocate minimizing reuse, I don’t advocate eliminating it. Legal notices, glossary definitions, and other boilerplate are obvious cases where reuse is the right strategy. But, in most of the cases where reuse really works, the content being reused is really “”meta-content,”" content that enhances, but is not central to, the document.
